Apple's choice of ADB and SCSI was made because they were technically superior that other technologies - serial, parallel, micro-channel, IDE, EIDE, etc. Apple moved to USB when it made sense (and well before it was popular). They helped develop Firewire because there was nothing like it (there still isn't, USB2 is inferior and there's nothing close to Firewire 800). I'll never undestand why cameras use iLink rather than full Firewire - seems doomed to make Firewire a second rate techhology when it is actually still way in front. Anyhow, the problem was the cost of Apple's choice of components, not the fact that they were proprietary.
