Albacorgasm

Since moving to Seattle, I’ve been looking for replacements for some of my old haunts down in T-Town. Strangely, one of the hardest to track down has been an excellent sushi restaurant. Tacoma has the incredible Fujiya, as well as Sushi Tama, which isn’t as amazing, but is still very good.

So far, I have tried:

So. That is where things stood… until yesterday. Yesterday, I went to The Oasis Café. I had been meaning to check the place out, since it’s two blocks from my apartment, but hadn’t gotten around to it. It’s not exclusively a Japanese restaurant; they serve Thai and Chinese food as well. I normaly go for the more traditional setting when I get my sushi.

But I can’t argue with good food, and their food is simply amazing. I had tempura to start, and it was easily the best tempura I have ever had. I knew I was in for a treat when the sushi came up. Each piece of nigiri was garnished; a very small bit of lemon, a sprout, and so on. It added a very unique twist, and worked extremely well with the fish.

Speaking of the fish. Oasis may have the best fish I have ever tasted. It’s supple, and begins to dissolve as soon as it enters your mouth. Absolutely heavenly.

In the brief moments my mouth was not filled with incredible seafood, I chatted with the sushi chef, Super Dave. He’s a very nice guy, and it turns out that he’s the nephew of the chef at the Fujiya. It seems that talent runs in the family.

Hey -

I totally agree with you about Oasis and Super Dave. It looks as though Dave is no longer with Oasis, and I’d like to keep up with him and check out wherever he goes next. Do you have any contact info for him? Could you maybe forward this message along to him if you do? Great, affordable sushi is rare, and I want to support the people who are good at it!

Hmm, I saw him there a few weeks ago. I’ll ask if I run into him. I went there again not too long ago, and Dave was not working. And the sushi was as bland and unexciting as every other place in this city.

He drives an orange Volkswagen Bus, so if you see that parked by Oasis, he’s there. And he can sometimes be found at Desami’s, across the street.

Jay, the previous owner of Oasis, has started a new restaurant down in Chinatown called J Sushi. Super Dave went with him and is their chef. It’s also gorgeous in there; they did a good job on the place. If you can’t tell the name of it by the sign, it’s because there’s an octopus eating the letter J.

Just thought I’d post since I’ve been looking for him too.
