Since moving to Seattle, I’ve been looking for replacements for some of my old haunts down in T-Town. Strangely, one of the hardest to track down has been an excellent sushi restaurant. Tacoma has the incredible Fujiya, as well as Sushi Tama, which isn’t as amazing, but is still very good.

So far, I have tried:

• HaNa. It’s not the greatest, but it’s a good value, and consistent. Makes an okay lunch, but not so good for dinner.
• Aoki. Good, but not great.
• Fuji Sushi, all the way in the International District. I had high hopes, but I just did not care for the food here. The rice seemed undercooked and tough, the fish was middling, and it’s expensive to boot. I was very disappointed.

So. That is where things stood… until yesterday. Yesterday, I went to The Oasis Café. I had been meaning to check the place out, since it’s two blocks from my apartment, but hadn’t gotten around to it. It’s not exclusively a Japanese restaurant; they serve Thai and Chinese food as well. I normaly go for the more traditional setting when I get my sushi.

But I can’t argue with good food, and their food is simply amazing. I had tempura to start, and it was easily the best tempura I have ever had. I knew I was in for a treat when the sushi came up. Each piece of nigiri was garnished; a very small bit of lemon, a sprout, and so on. It added a very unique twist, and worked extremely well with the fish.

Speaking of the fish. Oasis may have the best fish I have ever tasted. It’s supple, and begins to dissolve as soon as it enters your mouth. Absolutely heavenly.

In the brief moments my mouth was not filled with incredible seafood, I chatted with the sushi chef, Super Dave. He’s a very nice guy, and it turns out that he’s the nephew of the chef at the Fujiya. It seems that talent runs in the family.
