On Safari 3 Beta for Mac

Useless, hatred-inspiring claptrap.

The Good

  • Drag-and-drop tabs are awesome.
  • The new find is great. I can’t count the number of times I have hunted around a page for the highlighted text.

The Bad

  • It uses a .pkg installer. I hate .pkg installers; they make me uneasy. What do they need to install that lives outside the .app bundle? Why does it need administrator privileges? The WebKit nightlies install via drag-and-drop - why not this?
  • It requires a reboot after installation. This is not mentioned anywhere. Oh, and the Windows XP version? That does not require a reboot. What the hell?
  • It still uses Brushed Metal. I hate Brushed Metal. The Windows version? Yeah, that uses the new theme.
  • No find as you type, you still have to press Command-F.
  • There is no way to re-dock a detached tab if the tab bar is not visible on that window.

I agree with a lot of what you say. The reboot definitely took me by surprise.

There is a way to re-dock your detached tabs even when you don’t have the tab bar visible, though. Just do a “Merge All Windows” from the Window menu. I haven’t tried this on my Mac yet, but it works on the XP version.
