The Ongoing Train Wreck of Apple’s Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter

In the ongoing World of Fail that is Apple’s new laptops, the long-delayed Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapters don’t work.

In case you’re unfamiliar with this slow-motion trainwreck, Apple switched from DVI display connectors to Mini DisplayPort connectors on all their new laptops. Nobody makes monitors with DisplayPort yet, so you need an adapter to use your existing DVI monitor. Which is fine so long as you don’t have a large (30”) monitor, which requires a different (Dual-Link DVI) adapter, which Apple hasn’t been able to ship. In other words: If you had a 30” monitor and bought one of their new laptops, you’ve been staring at your reflection in the tiny glossy screen instead of using your normal monitor.

Steve really must be sick. I can’t see how he’d allow garbage like this to ship.

It’s all been downhill since Apple decided to model it’s new computers after Ellen Degeneres in raccoon makeup.

There are monitors with DisplayPort (e.g.: HP DreamColor) – the crucial disconnect relates to miniDisplayPort, which is peculiar to Apple for the present (gotta love the instant incompatibility of Mac Pro’s with Apple’s own mid-range Cinema display!). At macWorld SF, HP was speculating that there will be a miniDisplayPort->DisplayPort adapter at some point, and Gefen ventured they’d have a solution by March in the neighborhood of 200 clams. I’d say a Apple has blown a hole clean through their foot this time – ‘magine Samsung, HP and other 24″ LCD vendors will see their attach rate to FCP rigs spike for a while longer…
